Wabah demam berdarah dengue ( DBD) masih terus merajalela hampir seluruh kecamatan di Kabupaten Sikka, Pulau Flores telah mengakibatkan 600 lebih penderita enam korban di antaranya meninggal dunia.Pada saat wabah DBD itu masih menakutkan, kini warga Sikka dihantui ancaman wabah demam babi Afrika atau `African Swine Fever' (ASF) mengancam para peternak babi di Sikka.
"Memang belum ada indikasi. Tetapi, kami merasa khawatir karena pemasukan daging babi sulit dikontrol. Bali dan Timor sudah tertular ASF," beber Kepala Bidang Kesehatan Hewan Dinas Pertanian Sikka, drh.Margaretha Siko, kepada pos-kupang.com, Jumat (21/2/2020 di Maumere.
Ia menegaskan,idak semua penyakit babi bisa diobati terutama penyakit yang disebabkan oleh virus ASF, hog cholera, swine influenza dan porcine respiratory reproduction syndrome.
Menurut Metha, sapaan Margartha, penerapan biosecurity merupakan cara terbaik melindungi babi dari penyakit.
Dijelaskannya, faktor utama penularan penyakit babi adalah pemberian pakan limbah dapur yang telah tercemar daging babi atau sisa daging babi berupa air cucian daging babi.
Penularan lainnya melalui pernapasan, penularan melalui oral atau menelan kuman pemyakit dalam pakan, air, sekresi lainnya (lendir, muntahan, feses dan urin). Penularan melalui perkawinan dan penularan melalui vektor seperti tikus, burung, lalat, kutu dan kecoak.
Metha mengingatkan untuk tidak memberi pakan yang mengandung bahan asal hewan atau daging segar, daging olahan, darah jerohan,tulang, dan limbah cucian daging.
"Pakan yang mengandung limbah dapur harus dimasak lebih dahulu sampai mendidih 15 menit sebelum diberikan kepada ternak," wanti-wanti Metha.
Ia juga menyarankan isolasi terhadap babi yang baru didatangkan paling sedikit 30 hari sebelum digabung dengan ternak lama. Demikian juga perkawinan dapat menularkan penyakit.
