Sebelum dikenal sukses sebagai pengusaha, pria bernama asli Pujiono ini merupakan seorang tukang becak yang biasa membawa sayuran dari sebuah tempat yang bernama Geneng di Prawirotaman, Yogyakarta sekitar tahun 1992. Karena sering berada di sana, nama Geneng pun tersemat pada dirinya. Jadilah Pono Geneng pembawa sayur dengan becak miliknya.
Meski hanya menjadi seorang tukang becak, toh Pono memiliki prinsip hidup langka yang tak banyak dimiliki orang lain di negeri sebesar Indonesia ini, yakni kejujuran. Termasuk Pono yang pada saat itu menemukan tas tersebut. Meski merasa mendapatkan rezeki nomplok, ia tak lantas merasa gelap mata.
Tak lama, Pono pun membawa pulang tas tersebut dan ditunjukkan pada sang ibu. “Temuan uang tersebut saya ceritakan ke ibu, saya bilang kita bisa beli rumah, mobil dan lain-lain. Ini uang banyak sekali, mobil Carry yang bagus waktu itu harganya Rp 14 juta,” kata Pono Geneng saat bertutur di kediamannya, di Fribourg, Swiss yang dikutip dari News.koranbernas.id (08/02/2020).
Akhirnya, Pono pun mengembalikan uang tersebut ke pemiliknya – yang ternyata berasal Swiss bernama Charli Morandi dan sang istri yang menginap di hotel Garuda, setelah mencari dan bertanya ke sana kemari.
Usai mengembalikan uang, Pono tak mendapatkan ‘hadiah’ apa pun sebagai balas jasa atas kejujurannya tersebut.
Pono menerima nasibnya kala itu dengan besar hati. “Ya sudah mau apalagi, pulang jalan kaki. Semua saya ceritakan ke orang tua, ya bagaimana lagi,” kata Pono Geneng yang dikutip dari News.koranbernas.id (08/02/2020).
Oleh mereka, sosok Pono dinilai spesial karena kejujurannya yang luar biasa tersebut. Pada tahun 1992 pula, tukang becak jujur itu akhirnya diajak ke Swiss sebagai ungkapan rasa terima kasih mereka.
Selama berada di Swiss, Pono diajari cara bercocok tanam karena Charli Morandi dan istrinya ternyata seorang petani. Tiga tahun berlalu dihabiskan oleh Pono dengan bertani. Ia pun sudah dianggap sebagai anak sendiri oleh pasangan suami istri asal Swiss tersebut. Sayang, kehangatan tersebut tak lama terjalin lantaran orang tua angkatnya itu meninggal dunia karena penyakit gula.
